BBC appeal highlights pregnancies in third world poverty

Busworks-based charity Women and Children First (WCF) is launching a BBC Radio 4 appeal to highlight the plight of pregnant woman living in poverty.

WCF establish working groups for women in India, Bangladesh and Malawi to help women recognise life-threatening labour
problems or infections that can kill mothers and babies.

Since its launch in 2006, none of the women in the Bangladesh group has died from pregnancy-related causes.

Ros Davies, WCF’s Chief Executive, said: “Hundreds of thousands of women die in pregnancy and childbirth each year and seven
newborns die every minute.

It’s a terrible tragedy, which is made worse by the fact that these deaths are avoidable and lives can be saved at very low cost.

”The appeal is on Radio 4 at 7.55am on Sunday,
November 28th, repeated at 9.26pm, then at 3.27pm on Thursday, December 2nd.
